National airline of Tunis was formed as joint-venture between Tunis Government and Air France. Airline's first aircraft was Douglas DC-3. In 1954 Douglas DC-4 joined the fleet and scheduled flights commenced to Paris. Airline's first jet, Sud Caravelle, was delivered in August 1961. In 1971, fleet modernization began, when airline took delivery of Boeing 727 and 737 jets. In 1970s tourism took off and Tunisair charter business grew exponentially. For comparison in 1969 Tunisair handled 76,000 passengers whereas already in 1975 number grew to 750,000! Tunis Air also ordered Airbus A300 for its high-density routes to France, first being delivered in November 1982. In October 1990 Tunisair received its first Airbus A320. New company image is introduced. In 2009 Tunisair served 44 cities in 28 countries. Western European capitals as well as Istanbul, Athens, Geneva, Lyon, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Palermo and Belgrade are served together with Beirut, Damascus, Amman, Jeddah, Kuwait, Bahrain and Dubai in Middle East and Cairo, Tripoli, Benghazi, Abidjan, Bamako, Nouakchott, Dakar, Casablanca, Oran and Algiers in Africa and carried cca 3.5 million passengers.
