Government founded airline and flag carrier of Sudan. Operations commenced in July 1947 with DeHavilland DH.104 Doves, provided by Airwork Ltd of UK. In 1952 airline put in service DC-3s and two years later operated its first International flight from Khartoum to Cairo. First turboprop was Vickers Vicscount which entered service in January 1962. Sudan Airways was the first African Airline to introduce F-27 turboprop in January 1962. First jet, a de Havilland Comet, was delivered in November 1962. Airline modernized again in 1974 when Boeing 707 was delivered.
Sudan Airways was banned from flying into EU so its entire European network had to be abandoned. Today Airbus A300s and A310s provide service to Arabian Penninsula and Cairo. Fokker F-50s are used for regional service. In 1990 company employed 1720 people.
