SNB NB Sterling Airlines Sterling Denmark
Sterling European Airlines Denmark

note

Airline was formed as Sterling European Airlines in 1994 from the remnants of Sterling Airways which was founded in 1962. Two years later Fred Olson, Norwegian shipping magnate, purchased SEA. Airline operated charter flights from Denmark and other Scandinavian destinations to resorts in the Mediterranean and Middle East. In 2005, SEA was bought by icelandic investment company Fons Eignarhaldsfélag which also owned Iceland Express. In September airline changed name to Sterling Airlines after it acquired Maersk Air. Airline lost 800 million DKK in 2005. Airline returned to profitability in 2007, but rising fuel cost of 2008 and declining interest in air travel due to worldwide economic slowdown put airline back in red. Lack of interest from investors and severe cash flow problems forced airline to seize operations in October 2008. Cimber Air, Danish regional airline, purchased Sterling Airlines AOC, web site, brand and landing slots and revived the Sterling name in January 2009 as Cimber Sterling.
