In June 1956 Aristotle Onassis (shipping magnate) purchased failing TAE Greek National Airlines and transformed it into new company called Olympic Airways. This process was complete by April 1957. Airline first used DC-4 and DC-3S of defunct TAE. First jet service to London was conducted with BEA's Comet. First wide-body a 747 was delivered in June 1973. In 1975 Aristotle Onassis sold its interest to Greek government and airline has become flag carrier of Greece.
Olympic changed its name to Olympic Airlines in December 2003 and absorbed Olympic Aviation under this brand.
Olympic Airlines operates extensive domestic network, connects European capitals and commercial centers with points in Greece. Middle East and north Africa is served as well as long-haul flights to New York, Toronto, Johannesburg and Sydney.
In March 2009, government sold its interest in the airline to private group Marvin Investments. Airline declared bankruptcy and almost all its operations ceased on September 29 2009.
The new Olympic (Pantheon Airways) has been formed which took over some Olympic Airlines flights on September 29 2009 with plans to gradualy replace most of services offered by Olympic Airlines.
