note
South African charter airline established in 2002 by Rohan Vos, founder of Rovos Rail. Based at Wonderboom Airport, it operated classic aircraft like Convair 440s on luxury flights to destinations like Victoria Falls, complementing Rovos Rail’s train services.
In 2009, Rovos Air was sold to TIM Holdings and rebranded as Gryphon Airlines. The airline shifted to charter and military contract flights, using McDonnell Douglas DC-9 and MD-83 aircraft across Africa, the Middle East, and South Central Asia.
Gryphon Airlines operated scheduled flights to Baghdad Airport and supported U.S. military and contractor logistics in Iraq and Afghanistan, later focusing on Afghanistan via Dubai. The airline ceased operations in 2014.
