Star XL German Airlines was an charter carrier launched by the Avion Group of Iceland early in 2006. It received its operating certificate on May 3, 2006, and soon began operations. In November 2006 the airline and sister companies Excel Airways and Star Airlines were sold to management and was reorganized as XL Leisure Group. The latter entered administration in the UK on September 11, 2008, but XL Airways Germany continued to operate. XL Airways Germany (and France) was acquired by Straumur Investment Bank. The airline ceased operations on December 14, 2012, and entered bankruptcy on December 27.
