Airline was founded by Michael Chowdry as ACMI Cargo operator. Operations commenced in 1993 using one Boeing 747-200F aircraft. Airline grew rapidly during 1990s and was able to place order for 12 new Boeing 747 Freighters in 1998. In 2001 company acquired controlling interest in Polar Air Cargo owned by GECAS. This acquisition enabled Atlas Air to expand its operations worldwide. In 2006, Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings, parent of Atlas Air, went public.
DHL Express acquired 49% stake in Atlas Air in 2007.
Atlas Air Worldwide is the parent company of Atlas Air Inc. and Titan Aviation Leasing as well as the majority shareholder of Polar Air Cargo Worldwide Inc. Atlas Air Worldwide also maintained a 49% interest in Global Supply Systems Limited (GSS) until that joint venture with British Airways ended. Through Atlas and Polar, Atlas Air Worldwide operates the world's largest fleet of Boeing 747 freighter aircraft. Atlas also operates passenger aircraft primarily on military and adhoc charters
On April 7, 2016, Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings purchased Southern Air for $110 million in an all-cash deal.The transaction included Worldwide Air Logistics Group, Inc. and its two operating subsidiaries, Southern Air, Inc. and Florida West International Airways, Inc. The Florida West certificates were surrendered in early 2017, while the Southern Air operation was merged on November 17, 2021
