note
Zaïre Airlines was born in 1994 from the merger between Shabair and Zaïre Express. In April 1997, when the country changed its name to Democratic Republic of Congo, the use of the term "Zaïre" became prohibited. Thence the company changed its name to Congo Airlines. Later on in 2001, the airline was rebranded Hewa Bora Airways. Chairman and CEO: Stavros Papaioannou.
The entire Hewa Bora Airways fleet is blacklisted in European airspace. The Lockheed TriStar 500 and the Boeing 767-200ER were the last planes accepted in Europe before new noise regulations and storage of the 767 definitively banned the airline. Hewa Bora Airways was the last airline that was allowed to operate from the Democratic Republic of Congo into Europe.
