Largest private airline in Turkey. Company was founded as a joint venture of Aer Lingus and local businessman Silkar Yatırım to offer inclusive tour charter flights. Airline commenced operations in April 1990 using Boeing 737-400 aircraft. Aer Lingus sold its shares in 1994 to Yapi Kreditbank. In 1999 Pegasus becomes first Turkish airline to operate Boeing 737-800 aircraft. In 2005 airline was puchased by ESAS Holdings and adopted low-cost business model. In November 2005 first scheduled domestic service is commenced. In April 2007 Pegasus purchases 20% stake in IzAir. In 2008 Pegasus becomes member of IATA.
By 2009 Pegasus operates low cost scheduled passenger service to points in Turkey, Amsterdam, Athens, Basel, Berlin, Brussels, Dusseldorf, Krasnodar, Copenhagen, Köln, Nicosia, London, Munich, Stuttgart, Tehran, Vienna and Zurich abroad from its base at Istanbul Sabiha-Gokcen airport. In 2008 airline handled 4.4. million passengers.
In 2012 Pegasus Airlines purchases 49% stake in Kyrgyzstan low cost airline Air Manas which is later re-branded Pegasus Asia.
Pegasus Airlines tradition is naming new aircraft after the newborn daughters of its employees.
